Chaparral ecosystems provide protection against erosion and allow
underground water supplies to recharge, they moderate local
climates and provide habitats for a range of animals.
Their hard leaves are good in a semi-arid climate because they
reduce evaporation while the pores in the leaves permit the
exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
